Astrobiology is the multidisciplinary integration of biology, astronomy, and planetary science with an aim toward understanding the possibilities that might exist for life off Earth. This exciting science questions basic facts about the origin, evolution, and spread of life in space. With continually improving technological capabilities, the quest to understand life beyond our planet has never been more exciting.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Life

One of the most famous is the search for extraterrestrial life. Exoplanets—or planets orbiting other stars outside our solar system—have drawn scientists in because they may lie in the “habitable zone,” where conditions could be liquid-water-friendly. Thousands of exoplanets have been discovered by missions like the Kepler Space Telescope, which have reinvigorated the search and proved worlds beyond Earth may have vastly different atmospheric compositions and temperatures.

Critical Habitats for Life

Astrobiologists investigate extreme environments on Earth, such as hydrothermal vents, acidic lakes, and polar ice caps. They do this to understand which kinds of life might exist elsewhere in the universe, like on other planets-INCLUDING MARS, EUROPA-a moon of Jupiter, and ENCAtEDUS -a moon of Saturn. Each object suggests signs of an outer subsurface ocean or fundamental elements for life.

Chemistry of Life

The chemical basis of life is the other significant focus of this research. Astrobiologists are studying how organic molecules, central to life as we know it, are produced in space. And, are they preserved elsewhere in the universe? The discovery of amino acids, as well as more complex organic compounds, in meteorites and in the atmosphere of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, provides some very interesting possibilities about the origins of life.
